Anxiety and depression are common issues for people with chronic respiratory disease.

Prior to commencing a rehabilitation program it is recommended for patients to be screened for the existence of clinically significant symptoms of anxiety and depression so that these issues can be addressed.

Assessment tools include:

Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) – licence required. This questionnaire is designed to detect and measure the severity of anxiety and depression. It consists of a series of 14 statements, with responses based on a 4-point Likert scale. A higher score is indicative of greater anxiety or depression. The HADS is self administered and is responsive to pulmonary rehabilitation.

The DASS 21 screening tool is a publicly available, self-administered tool with 21 questions.

A referral to a mental health clinician should be implemented as required.

Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy can be measured using the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Adapted Index of Self-Efficacy – PRAISE (Chest 2012)

This tool is composed of 15 statements, each of which is scored from 1 to 4, with a higher score indicating greater levels of self-efficacy.

PRAISE is reproducible and sensitive to change following pulmonary rehabilitation in people with COPD.

Patient Feedback

For comprehensive evaluation of a rehabilitation program, patient feedback is desirable.

When asking for feedback:

De-identify the patient responses where possible

Reflect the content of the home based program in the survey

Providing a space for comments
