Maintenance programs
For the positive effects of a pulmonary rehabilitation program to be maintained in the long term, patients should be encouraged to be involved in a maintenance program.
Some examples of maintenance sessions are:
Continuing with the home exercises performed during the program
Joining a local walking group
Joining a gym or exercise class
Joining a “Lungs in Action” group
Finding a friend to exercise with
Starting a new activity such as swimming, bowling, bush walking
Following a rehabilitation program, patients should be encouraged to do at least three home training sessions per week.
To encourage ongoing exercise, it may be beneficial to offer a follow up assessment.
